Tell me about the Poseidon Brand
Poseidon Bikes was founded in 2014 as a entry level, affordable bicycle brand. Their focus is to offer bicycles in the entry-level range that are operational, functional and for the most part, can stack up to rides that are twice the cost. From empirical testing, this is mostly true and from time to time there are some mechanical challenges with their bicycles, though for the value, and their ability to replace components, the drawbacks of a value-based company are more than worth it. The main value-add that you can do to this bike is get a professional bike fitting.
They are based in southern California, and with the name Poseidon drawing from the aim of simply being able to get away, to find stillness and serenity in their bicycles. They are a direct to consumer company – meaning they build their bicycles in the united states, and sell them to directly to the consumer.
“Have you ever wanted to get away for a short time? Clear your head for peaceful moments as you explore the town you have lived in with a new perspective.” – Poseidon Bikes
How do I feel about the Poseidon Triton Road Bike?
For this Poseidon road bike review, I took the Poseidon Triton for a ride from my home down to Pacifica. I dealt with a little under 2000 feet of climbing and descending in the ride (of course with a stop at the Taco Bell for break). The ride is what you would expect of an entry level bike. I made a wrong turn and found myself along the dirt trail through Mori Point and absolutely would not recommend doing any off-road work on the bike. The tires when they are off smooth ground loose their virility quickly (and I have read elsewhere before mounting that they have trouble holding air with punctures). Second, the frame is aluminum. You typically don’t want to put that much uneven pressure on this type of framing.
The main drawback that I found during the ride was that after it was built, I noticed that my chain was having a bit of trouble shifting from the lowest gear to the next lowest gear while hill climbing. But, yet again, as a value climbing bicycle, this is to be expected that there will be one very small malfunction. The main way to get around it is to shift back into the lowest gear and try once more.
Overall Thoughts of Poseidon Triton
I feel that this is a good bicycle to start getting your feet wet in the space of road bikes. What this bike is good for is getting to and from work on a commute, beginning to learn the art of hill climbing, when and how to shift, and what really makes a road bike “tick.” The main value is that you will learn about the drivetrain, the derailleur, the pedals, the shifters and the brakes so that when you do decide to upgrade (this bike will make you fall in love with the sport) you will be able to make the right decision for you rather than asking a friend, or looking for a shop attendant’s opinion.
The shifters are a 10 speed which, while I never took the time to notice, many higher end bicycles are 11 speed. When taking time to get over some higher elevation hills, there were some moments when I found myself looking for an “in-between” gear. Of course, if you haven’t ridden an 11-speed bike, this is a moot point, and again – the focus is on a value entry level bicycle. So this is to be expected with this purchase.
Overall, this is a great bike to begin with, and when you go to replace it and upgrade, the majority of your bike cost will be recouped. It doesn’t lose very much resale value from what I have researched (or you can give it to your favorite nephew).
